Product Details

The hauberk was worn by professional warriors from the Dark Ages into the early Medieval period.

Because it was an expensive item, it was worn only by leaders and successful warriors around Europe. For the Nordic Vikings and the Anglo-Saxon Huscarls it was a status symbol and set them apart from the average warrior. It was worn widely by the Norman knights and as a result the hauberk is seen to be more associated with them. It was worn by Knights and the more wealthy men-at-arms well into the14th century although by then it was becoming redundant by plate and other rigid forms of armour on the limbs and was gradually superseded by the shorter haubergeon.

In its day though it provided a more than adequate form of protection against most weapons when worn in conjunction with a gambeson.

Some forms of Hauberk had an integral maille hood (or coif) which covered the entire neck and head (apart from the face). This is particularly true with the Normans and early medieval Knights. While Lord of Battles does not produce this type of hauberk (the addition of the coif to the haubek will require some tailoring to fit the individual wearer comfortably) you can buy a hauberk and a coif from us along with some loose rivets and make the intregral garment yourself without too much work.

If you are portraying a Norman Knight or early medieval knight we would recommend that you use the hauberk in association with the coif and ventail as this is the more authentic option.

Note that the garment needs to be worn over a gambeson or thick undertunic to prevent chaffing and to absorb blunt force impact and still be fairly loose fitting over the padding so that it can be taken on and off easily and provide maximum free movement while being worn. So the sizing must take this into account. We offer hauberks in sizes M, L, XL and XXL:

The garment can be blackened or left in a natural oiled finish.
