Product Details
Our Lord of Battles Lorica Segmentata is made from 1.2mm thick low carbon steel with brass fittings. We can have it made in thicker steel if required but this will add to the cost. However, because of the flexible nature of this armour, plus the degree of overlap between the plates, 1.2mm steel is more than adequate for all but the most extreme forms of reenactment combat.
The Lorica Segmenta (segmented plates) was a type of laminated or lamellar armour made from metal strips fashioned into circular bands.
The Latin name was first used in the 16th century (the original name is unknown, although it is possible that the Romans referred to the armour as "lorica laminata". The armour itself consisted of broad metallic strips fastened to internal leather straps.
The currently accepted range for the use of the armour is from about 9 B.C. to the late 3rd century A.D. Its use was geographically widespread but maille may have been more common at all times.
The strips were arranged horizontally on the body, overlapping downwards, and they surrounded the torso in two halves, being fastened at the front and back. The upper body and shoulders were protected by additional strips ("shoulder guards") and breast- and backplates. The form of the armour allowed it to be stored very compactly, since it was possible to separate it into four sections. The fittings that closed the various plate sections together (buckles, tie-hooks, tie-rings, etc.) were made of brass.
Available in polished or black finishes.
