Product Details
Chausses are maille coverings for the legs. They cover the top of the foot and legs. They first appeared as simple maille tubes in the 12th century and quickly evolved to protect the feet as well. They persisted into the 15th century among the poorer classes of soldiers but by the 14th century were becoming pretty much obsolete for the better healed warriors.
Inspired by the legendary Bayeux Tapestry, which showcases Duke William the Conqueror, our chainmail chausses/hoses blend historical accuracy with modern functionality. Initially a luxury reserved for the elite, by the dawn of the 12th century, chainmail was the standard equipment of brave knights. Envision yourself clad in these superb leggings, feeling invulnerable—just as the knights of history once did.
Our chausses from Lord of Battles need to be completed by the purchaser as everybody has different sized feet and legs. To complete the chausses you will need to trim the bottom of each chausse to fit your feet and then sew this to a thick leather sole. Make sure you leave enough room inside the foot to allow you to wear some thick wooden hose or socks. You will also need to trim and shape the top of each chausse so that it covers your legs to just below the fold of your hips. Also allow enough maille to extend up the front of your hip so each chausse can be laced or secured to a thick waist belt or better still an arming vest.
