Product Details

From about the mid 14th century the flat face of the earlier visored bascinets began to be drawn out into a distinctive long snout appearance hence the term "Pig Face" or "Hounds Skull" bascinet. It continued to evolve well into the 15th century but this example is one of the earleir versions.

Our Lord of Battles pig faced bascinet is made from 1.6mm mild steel and has a deeper visor than most helments of this type to provide extra protection to the front of the throat.

This particular helmet is not listed on the Lord of Battles website and their other distrubutors do not usually stock it. Lord of Battles makes them specially for us and we carry them in permanent stock because of both local and international customer demand. If you want are not in New Zealand and want one, please contact us for a shipping quote to your country.

I do most of my jousting in this style of helmet. My own helmet was custom made for me many years before I started using Lord of Battles products. I would happily joust in this Lord of Battles version of this iconic medieval helmet. It is extremely well made and has sharp deflection surfaces so most head shots would glace off.

The visor is fully adjustable for a comfortable fit and is historically correct in that there are no breathing holes on the left side of the visor which is the most exposed side for a mounted warrior. There is no locking clip for the visor. Rather the visor is secured by a more sturdy belt and buckle arrangement.

Approximate weigh for the 1.6mm version is 2.7kgs and the helmet is available in 68 cm circumference. The helmet also comes with a simple leather suspenion liner. We can get them made in 1.4 mm mild steel.

This style of helmet does not provide complete head or throat protection so it should be worn with an attached maille aventail over a padded collar/arming cap which we can also supply. Note that the helmet is fitted with steel vervailles for securing a leather strip on which is stitched the maille aventail.
