Our leather tankard is made from thick rawhide (from humanely sluaghtered domestic cattle) and has been treated with beeswax on the inside to water proof it. It has a capacity of 500 ml - 600 ml. It is 16 cm high and approximately 9 cm in diameter.
The thick beeswax inside the horn can be remved by careful heating. It is applied as a thick coat so the wax can impregnate the leather so it is thoroughtly waterproofed. If you need to reproof it you just add more wax in its liquid state and remove the excess.
Leather drinking vessels like this were used alongside horn drinking vessels from the earliest times but the style of these tankards is more associated with the 17th century onwards - in partcular for sailors and dock side taverrns.
Suitable for any cold drink or warm beverage and the beeswax does not transfer into the beverage. However we would advise against using it for watm or hot liquids as this may cause the leather to soften and the beeswax to melt.
