A morion is a type of open helmet used from the middle 16th and early 17th centuries, usually having a flat brim and a crest from front to back. Its introduction was contemporaneous with the exploration of North, Central, and South America. The morion first appered in the early part of the 16th century and was a further evolution of the medieval Kettle Hat. Throughout the 16th and 17th centuries it it was widely used among foot soldiers of many European nationalities, including the English, Scottish (This style of helmet is an iconic piece of equipment associated with the Border Reivers), German and other European armies. Low production costs aided its popularity and dissemination although officers and elite guards who would have theirs elaborately engraved to display their wealth and status.
The crest or comb on the top of the helmet was designed to strengthen it. Later versions also had cheek guards and even removable faceplates to protect the soldier from sword cuts.
Our Lord of Battles morian is very well made in 1.6mm or 2.0mm steel and comes with a leather suspension liner with steel overlapping plates to provide some protection against cuts to the side of the face.
