Product Details

Gambesons are padded under tunics. They have been used since antiquity and had a number of important functions including acting as a cushion to absorb the forces of a blow and to support the weight of overlying metal armour.

This style of gambeson was common in the 11th to 13th centuries throughout Europe and are depicted in numerous period illustrations.

Whether you just want a stylish and functional piece of standalone armour or as a foundation to build a more complete suit of armour from this period then this product is highly recommended. It forms the basis of our early medieval 'Starter Sets'. It is a 'medium weight' gambeson with 3 layers of felt padding sandwiched between an inner and outer later of cotton. The simple cloth buttons are among the earliest historical examples of buttons.

Available usually in plain off-white or black. If you prefer we can arranged to have them made in a range of other  colours or split colours (blue/yellow, black/white, red/green for example) for an additional cost and a minimum quantity applies.
