Product Details

This is our BEST SELLER in our gambeson range and we have sold well over 200 of these gambesons in New Zealand since 2012. The first one I ordered for myself in late 2012. I use it almost once a week in our sword class and it is still going strong with only minor maintenance required (see note below). I then brought another one in 2013 which I use on horseback and it too has required only minimal maintenance.

Gambesons are padded under tunics. They have been used since antiquity and had a number of important functions including acting as a cushion to absorb the forces of a blow and to support the weight of overlying metal armour.

Based on a surviving example from the mid/late14th century, this style of gambeson was common in the 14th century. It has superb mobility especially around the shoulder joints which gives your arms a full range of motion without the 'lock up' that you find in other commercially made gambesons of this type.

Available in Off-White or Black.

Whether you just want a stylish and functional piece of standalone armour or as a foundation to build a more complete suit of armour then this product is highly recommended. It is a medium weight gambeson with 3 layers of felt padding sandwiched between an inner and outer layer of cotton. The simple cloth buttons are among the earliest historical examples of buttons.
