This is our BEST SELLER and we have sold well over 100 of these gambesons in New Zealand since 2012. The first one I ordered for myself in late 2012. I use it almost once a week in our sword class and it is still going strong with only minor maintenance required (see note below). I then brought another one in 2013 which I use on horseback and it too has required only minimal maintenance.
Gambesons are padded under tunics. They have been used since antiquity and had a number of important functions including acting as a cushion to absorb the forces of a blow and to support the weight of overlying metal armour.
Based on a surviving example from the mid/late14th century, this style of gambeson was common in the 14th century and within our own club (Order of the Boar) we have selected it as our standard club gambeson because it is one of the best "off the shelf" commercial gambeson that we have found anywhere for our period of interest (late 14th century) while being half the price of simular quality garments we have seen (and used) elsewhere. It has superb mobility especially aroudn the shoulder joints.
Available in Off-White, Black, Red and Split Red/Black (originally made for me as a custom order). If you want other colour options for your club then contact me. Additional charges and a minumum order quantity apply.
Whether you just want a stylish and functional piece of standalone armour or as a foundation to build a more complete suit of armour then this product is highly recommended. It is a medium weight gambeson with 3 layers of felt padding sandwiched between an inner and outer layer of cotton. The simple cloth buttons are among the earliest historical examples of buttons.
Note: We have found after some use that the button holes become loose leading to the buttons becoming undone. This can be fixed by wearing a waist belt or by spending a few hours stitching around the button holes to reinforce them.
