Despite the rapid development and uptake of plate armour from the beginning of the 14th century, many warriors could not afford to buy much plate armour and had to make do with either padded or maille armour and add what bits of plate they could scavenge or afford. Protecting the vulnerable joints was the priority and smaller pieces of plate armour were incorporated into these older types of armour to provide this additional protection.
The knees are prone to injury and our poleyns have a big and well shaped leaf for protecting the outside and back of the knee. A strap and buckle secure the poleyn aournd the back of the knee and there are two holes on the top edge of the padding ot secure it further by lacing it to either padded leg armour or leggings. Made from 1.6mm mild steel.
