Product Details

This historical helmet is a specific form of kettle hat with vision slits in the brim. It was quite popular in the Holy Roman Empire and German-influenced regions like the modern-day Czech Republic, Hungary, and Poland. The helmet combines mobility and protection effortlessly, rendering it highly sought after and valued in siege warfare or infantry versus cavalry for fending off attacks from above.

While typically featuring a wider brim, there are examples with a slenderer brim like this kettle helmet. The kettle hat depicted in the BNF Latin 512 Speculum Humanae Salvationis from 1410 is one of the many such examples of this type of German-style Kettle hat in which the brim is seen to be narrower.

This helmet is hand made from 1.6mm (16 gauge) mild steel and has an antiqued finish (this would be a more typical finish of the time for a mass produced infantry helmet). The height is about 28 cm, and the base is about (28.7×25) cm. The eye slits are about 7.5 cm long and 0.65 cm wide. This helmet with an inner circumference of 68 cm (before padded liner attachment) and will fit most head circumferences from about 58cm to 61cm, depending on the shape of the wearer’s head. If you desire to wear an additional padded cap, then measure your head circumference while wearing it. (The padded liner already attached inside the helmet is usually enough for most adult male heads). It weighs about 2.1 kg.

Note: This product is carefully coated with a layer of oil when packaged that acts as a temporary (protective) layer against corrosion (rust), which can easily be wiped off using any oil remover or even a dry cloth.
