Product Details
As plate armour technology developed during the 14th century, the maille haubergeon or hauberk became more and more redundant as plate armour began to cover more of the torso and limbs. But the lower torso and upper legs remained vulnerable as it is difficult to protect this area with solid armour as this would impede mobility. So maille was still necessary to protect this area. The Maille Skirt first appeared in the late 14th century and was secured around the waist to an arming jacket which was also developed to attach upper leg armour to as well.
The skirt illustrated here is my own Lord of Battles large sized one. It has a leather band (which I added as it does not come with this) to the top of the skirt to secure it to an arming jacket with leather thongs. The hem of the skirt has been dagged (this was a common decorative feature in many maille garments) and edged with brass links for additional decoration. Note we cannot provide skirts finished like this and can only provide them in a plain rectangle but we illustrate this example just to show what can be done with a little bit of finishing by the purchaser.
