Product Video - Assymetrical Pauldrons and Gorget

Produced throughout Europe in the early/mid 15th century, this type of complete shoulder and arm protection incorporates large and smooth glancing surfaces in its construction, the theory being that these rounded surfaces would help to deflect an opponents weapon.

The pauldrons evolved from the earlier spaulders which originally only protected the outside of the upper arms. As they evolved more of the shoulder was covered and they also started to cover the outside edges of the upper chest and back. Because the right arm required more freedom of movement than the left (for a right handed swordsman) the right pauldron covered less area than the left pauldron and they became asymmetrical.

The lower arms complete the protection of the lower part of the upper arm, elbow and lower arms. There is a big and well shaped leaf for elbow protection and for better flexibility.

The gorget in the set is this one -  15th Century Gothic Gorget.
