This late 14th century Milanese cuirass with tonlets was a natural progression from the one piece breast plate. Narrow strips of steel were added as bands below the breasplate and suspended from leather to allow them to collapse so the wearer could bend their torso in all directions. A back plate was also added to provide complete all-round torso protection.
The "V" shaped 'stop rib' on the breastplate helped defect thrusts and upward blow away from the face and head.
The Milanese style was noted for its simplicity and functionality. So this cuirass persisted well into the 15th century.
