Product Details

In medieval combat the hands were always vulnerable and period fighting manuscripts show specific techniques for targeting the hands.

In earlier times leather gloves or leather gloves backed with maille or small scales were used but while these could protect them from cuts, they provided very little protection from impact. In the 14th century when plate armour making skills started to get more refined so by the 15th century there were several styles available that allowed for the full flexion of the wrist and fingers allowing for advanced Western Martial Arts techniques to be made with almost complete safety for the hands and wrists. One of the more common styles of gauntlet was the "mitten' used my men-at-arms and common foot soldiers which persisted from the 15th century well into the 16th century because of its simple construction and great protective ability.

Our Lord of Battles mitten shell gauntlets are made from 1.6mm steel and are suitable for both mounted and foot combat. It can be made in lighter steel for less strenuous use.

Like our earlier 14th centry hourglass gauntlets, we think that they are so good we always try to keep a few pairs in stock.
