From the 10th century up until the 13th century maille armour provided good protection against the weapons of the day. However, as weapons weapons evolved maille armour exposed vulnerabilities especially around the knees, elbows and arm pits. Simple steel rondells appeared to protect these vulnerable areas in artwork dating from the early 1300's (the images depicted here are from Bologna, Italy, circa 1325 - 1375 and the famous Bargello carving from 1320 also from Italy).
Our rondels are copied from finds from the Battle of Visby (Gotland, Sweden), in 1361.
Our pair of rondels are made from 16 guage (1.6mm) mild steel and are 21 cm in diameter. They have two holes to lace them to your maille or gambeson using arming points/aglets. They also have a untanned leather edging to help prevent the edge of the rondel catching on the maille links when you move. It can also be dyed in a colour of your choice for decoration. Includes a pair of leather lacing thongs.
