Forging form-fitting full 2-piece greaves was (and still is today) one of the most difficult and expensive tasks to do as due to the variation of the musculature of the lower leg, 2-pieve greaves really need to be custom-fitted for each individual.
Adjustable 3-segment greaves offered a more cost-effective solution as many could be made in the same amount of time that it would take to forge a pair of custom made 2-piece greaves and they could more easily fit a wider variety of different leg shapes.
First appearing in early 14th Century effigies, 3-segmented greaves appeared to be popular in Germany and central Europe and persisted into the 15th century. They can be seen in many 14th century effigies and illustrustions including on the effigy of Burchard von Steinberg (photo popposite) from 1376, Lower Saxony, Germany.
They consisted of a front plate and 2 side plates that wrap around the entire lower leg. They are secured by two straps and buckles on the backs of the side plates. They are flared at the bottom to fit over the ankle joint and to allow them to be worn over ankle boots or sabatons (steel foot armour).
Our Lord of Battles 3-Segmented Greaves are made in 16-gauge mild steel and have been painted black on the inside for rust resistence. They come with leather straps and period armouring buckles.
They were typically worn over padded arming hose and were either laced to points on the hose or loosely attached to the upper leg armour by a leather strap. They are left plain so you can decide how to attach them. In the photos they are rather loose on me so I would move the buckles further to the fronts of the side plates and we can provide armouring rivets for you to do this. Once you have them fitted comfortably you can also trim off any excess from the leather straps for a tidier look.
