Product Details
Gambesons are padded under tunics. They have been used since antiquity and had a number of important functions including acting as a cushion to absorb the forces of a blow and to support the weight of overlying metal armour.
Although no gambesons survive prior to the late 14th century, based on what little evidence we have, this type of gambeson is probably similar to the style of gambeson used during the Dark Ages, Viking and Saxon era and early Medieval Period. It can be worn with or without sleeves.
It could be worn as the sole protection for an archer ot a foot soldier or used as a foundation to wear under maille to stop it chaffing against the skin.
This is a 'medium weight' gambeson with 3 layers of cotton batting sandwiched between an inner and outer later of cotton. This gambeson protects the entire body from the knees to the neck and the collar can be secured with simple ties ot buttons.
Available in plain off-white, brown or black.
