Gorgets were developed to protect the upper shoulders and back area around the neck and often extended up to cover the front and sides of the neck as many of the infantry helmets of the time did not protect these areas.
This example of a later style helmet was developed to be worn in conjunction with the Morion style of helmet and is associated with the Scottish Border Reivers, Spanish Conquistadors and other European armies of the time.
