The brass knob has a small screw attached to a chain keeper. Loosening this screw allow you to slide the ring that the screw is attached to upwards, revealing a small and very low power telecope in a pivoting mount. The tip of the knob is a lens cap and once you remove that you have a (very) low power functional telecope with an adjustible eye piece to allow focusing.
The shaft itself can be unscrewed into 3 pieces. If you remove the middle piece you have a short cane that is 70 cm long. If you remove the middle and bottom piece you have a short baton that is 40 cm long.
