During the period from the early 13th to mid 14th centuries, the old Noman style helmet had evolved into its most refined and elegant form -the Great Helm. Over the previous few centuries, the nasal on the Norman Helm was gradually enlarged to cover the full front of the head. The final evolution was the extension of the sides and back of the helmet to fully enclose the head resulting in this Great Helm.
This provided exceptional head and neck protection from all angles at the expense of peripheral vision. Although its use might go back to the late 12th century, the ealiest record of its existance is 1210 AD. Its use persisted well into the 14th century. But by the mid 14th century it had been superceded by trhe early visored bascinets on the battlefield. Although it retained its use as a jousting helm perhaps into the early 15th century. Its final evolution was into the proto-Frog Mouth jousting helm of the late 14th century and then the full Frog Mouthed jousting helm of the 15th century.
But its battlefield use for approximately 150 years showed just how how effective it was in the tumultuous chaos of battle where you could be attacked from any direction.
