Product Video - Kettle Hat

The Kettle Hat is one of the most recognisable helmets in the world as its use prevailed for longer than that of any other helmet in history. Its simple construction together with its general protective qualities made it universally popular. First seen in statues and manuscript illustrations from the end of the 12th century, its basic form has survived almost ot the modern day in the form of the famous British "tommy helmet' used by various armed forces well into the last century.

It is also a very popular re-enactment helmet and we use it ourselves for both mounted melee and ground combat. As practitioners in these actvities, we are very conscious of safety - especially when it comes to blows to the head so we have selected this helmet from Lord of Battles as our club helmet because it was in common use during our main period of interest. Like all their other helmets that we recommend the overall construction and craftsmanship is outstanding. Steel rivets bind two crossing strips on this helmet providing an additional defence against downwards blows and the sloping brim helps to deflect them.

This fully functional reproduction is hand made from 16-gauge mild steel, lined with a comfortable and secure leather liner. A circumference of approximately 68 cm (without liner) makes it fit almost all head sizes (65 cm with liner). A sturdy chin strap with a brass buckle closure keeps the helmet secure during battle. The total height is about 18 cm and the base is about (33×32) cm. The weight is approximately 2.4 kg.

Note: This product is carefully coated with a layer of oil when packaged that acts as a temporary (protective) layer against corrosion (rust), which can easily be wiped off using any oil remover or even a dry cloth.
