The origin of the celata (also known as a sallet) seems to have been in Italy, where the term celata is first recorded in an inventory of the arms and armour of the Gonxaga family dated to 1407.The earliest celata (which this one is an exmaple of) were a variant of the bascinet, intended to be worn without an aventail or visor. To protect the face and neck, left exposed by abandonment of the visor and aventail, the rear was curved out into a flange to protect the neck, and the sides of the helmet were drawn forward below the level of the eyes to protect the cheeks.
It was commonly used by archers and light infantry who required high mobility with some degree of protection.
It has a 68cm forehead circumference and is mande from 14 gauge mild steel with an approximate weight of 2.2 kg.
It weighs 2.2 kg in 1.6mm steel.A leather liner is provided and this can be adjusted so the helmet can comfortably fit most head shapes.
A padded arming cap should be worn with this helmet and for additional protection around the base of the neck and shoulders a maille standard (collar) can be worn over the arming cap.
