Product Details

Voiders are pieces of maille that were sewn onto the arming doublet or arming coat to protect the underside of the upper arms and armpits as these areas cannot be fully covered by plate armour.

They are commonly associated with the full plate armour that appeared in the late 14th century although their appearance is not documented until the 15th century. As plate armour technology developed, the use of a maille haubergeon or hauberk became redundant as most of it became covered by the plate armour. However, plate armour could not cover the joints as this would severely restrict mobility - particulalry around the shoulders and upper arms. This left this area vulnerable so voiders were developed to protect these areas.

The voiders illustrated have been sewn onto the user's arming doublet and are made from wedge rivetted flat iron links alternating with solid flat iron links.
